Assoc. Prof. Zahari Vinarov, PhD Pharm., PhD Chem., Chair of the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Sofia University, 1164 Sofia, Bulgaria.
I was born on 19 April 1985 in Sofia, Bulgaria. During my first PhD (in Chemistry), I developed a novel in vitro model of the human gastrointestinal tract to study the enzymatic digestion of lipids. In my second PhD, (Pharmacy), my attention was focused on the mechanism of solubilization of poorly-water soluble drugs and the link to their low oral absorption. Based on my track-record, I was invited to join the Core-group of the “European network on understanding of gastrointestinal absorption-related processes” (www.ungap.eu), as a co-lead of workgroup 3 (Advanced drug formulations). Afterwards, I secured a postdoc position in the group of prof. Patrick Augustijns (KU Leuven), on a project with Janssen Pharmaceutica and Ghent University, entitled “Robotics for Comprehensive Physiological Pharmaceutical Performance”. I am currently leading several research projects funded by the pharmaceutical industry or public agencies focused on oral biopharmaceutics of amorhpous solid dispersions and lipid formulations, where we combine state-of-the-art in vitro models, scattering techniques and computational chemistry approaches to understand and predict the fate of oral drugs after ingestion.
