Mannose receptor-targeted glycopolymers for the treatment of rheumatic diseases

The mannose receptor (MR) is a C-type lectin involved in physiological and pathological pathways, such as scavenging and antigen presentation. Its role in the onset of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is now under study. One possible mechanism of MR-mediated inflammation could involve the binding and internalization of the mannosylated enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO), known as a mediator of inflammation in RA. 3-O-sulfo-galactosylated glycopolymers (SG), recently found to bind MR blocking its endocytic activity, could ideally reduce the effects of MPO, exerting a positive impact on the disease.
