Dr. Tejal Desai is currently the Sorensen Family Dean of Engineering at Brown University and Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Previously, she served as the Deborah Cowan Professor and Ernest Prien Chair of Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF and Professor in Residence, Department of Bioengineering, UC Berkeley. Desai’s research spans multiple disciplines including nanotechnology, tissue engineering, and drug delivery and she has published over 275 peer-reviewed articles and patents. She is a fellow of AIMBE, IAMBE, CRS, and BMES as well as a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine and National Academy of Inventors. Desai is a vocal advocate for inclusion in STEM and her work to break down institutional barriers was recognized by the CRS WIS Award, the AWIS Judith Poole Award and the UCSF Chancellors Award for the Advancement of Women. She received her B.S. from Brown University in biomedical engineering in 1994 and was awarded a Ph.D. in bioengineering jointly from UCSF and UC Berkeley in 1998.
