Advanced multilayer islet encapsulation incorporating CTLA-4 and ZnO nanoparticles for localized immunomodulation for Type 1 Diabetes.

Description: In this presentation, I will discuss a novel approach to enhancing islet transplantation outcomes for type 1 diabetes through layer-by-layer (LbL) encapsulation technique using Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Chitosan (Cs). This approach includes embedding ZnO nanoparticles for reactive oxygen species scavenging and surface functionalization with CTLA-4 for T-cell modulation, which is currently a work in progress. Preliminary methods have involved encapsulating MIN6 spheroids and assessing their viability and functionality, particularly focusing on the effects of ZnO nanoparticles within the coating, with promising expectations for the CTLA-4 component to enhance immunomodulatory outcomes.
